Mazda MX-5 Miata NB/NBFL Cold Air Intake – OEM & 64mm throttle body, 1998–2005
Tuning3D Short Air Intake – Mazda MX-5 NB / NBFL
A compact short intake system engineered specifically for the Mazda MX-5 NB and NBFL.
The precisely designed 85° elbow geometry creates a short, direct airflow path while maintaining full compatibility with the original MAF sensor, intake air temperature sensor, and OEM ECU.
The result is a lightweight, responsive, and purpose-engineered alternative to universal silicone elbow conversions.
Key Features
• Very short and direct intake path
• Designed for sharp throttle response
• Compatible with the original Mazda ECU
• Retains the OEM MAF and intake air temperature sensor
• Modular PCV / breather connection
• Flexible TPU couplers absorb vibration and engine movement
• High-strength, heat-resistant main intake body
• Lightweight construction
• Fully reversible installation
• No cutting, drilling or permanent modifications required
• No ECU tuning required
• OEM and 64 mm throttle body configurations available
• Available with or without an air filter
What Does It Do?
The Tuning3D intake replaces the long factory intake tract with a much shorter and more direct airflow path.
Reducing unnecessary intake volume helps provide a more immediate throttle response while also producing a more pronounced induction sound.
Unlike a basic universal short intake, the system is designed specifically around the MX-5 engine bay and properly integrates the MAF sensor, intake air temperature sensor and PCV / breather connection.
Flexible couplers isolate the intake body from engine vibration and movement, improving durability while making installation and removal easier.
Throttle Body Configuration
Choose your throttle body configuration directly from the product options when ordering.
OEM Throttle Body
Includes:
• MAF coupler
• OEM throttle body coupler
OEM + 64 mm Throttle Body
Includes:
• MAF coupler
• OEM throttle body coupler
• Additional 64 mm throttle body coupler
The 64 mm option is designed for selected aftermarket throttle bodies, including commonly used Skunk2-style 64 mm units.
When the 64 mm option is selected, the OEM throttle body coupler is still included.
This means the intake can be used with either the original throttle body or the selected 64 mm aftermarket throttle body.
If you initially purchase the OEM-only version and upgrade the throttle body later, the 64 mm coupler can also be purchased separately without replacing the complete intake system.
PCV / Breather Connection
The intake includes a modular threaded breather port.
It can be used with the supplied hose fitting or closed using the included plug when the connection is not required.
📦 What’s Included
Every intake includes:
• Main intake body
• Flexible MAF coupler
• Flexible OEM throttle body coupler
• 4 main clamps
• PCV / breather fitting
• PCV sealing plug
• Breather hose
• Hose clamps
• Intake air temperature sensor retaining hardware
• Sealing O-ring
When the OEM + 64 mm throttle body option is selected, the package also includes:
• Additional 64 mm throttle body coupler
Air filter is included only when Ramair or GReddy is selected in the product options.
If No Filter is selected, the intake is supplied without an air filter.
Filter Compatibility
The Mazda MX-5 NB and NBFL use different headlight shapes, which affects the available space for the air filter.
Configuration 1 – Filter Mounted Directly to the MAF
When mounting the air filter directly onto the MAF sensor, use a filter with a 70 mm inlet.
Pre-Facelift MX-5 NB / NB1 – 1998–2000
• Recommended maximum filter length: approximately 140–145 mm
• A 150 mm filter may fit very tightly but is not recommended for guaranteed clearance
• Always verify the actual filter dimensions before ordering
Facelift MX-5 NBFL – 2001–2005
• Larger headlight clearance
• Filters up to approximately 160 mm can normally be used
• Always verify the actual filter dimensions before ordering
Configuration 2 – Optional Velocity Stack
The optional Tuning3D Velocity Stack creates a smoother transition from the air filter into the MAF sensor, helping improve airflow entry into the intake.
It also provides a more aggressive induction sound and allows the use of a filter with a much larger inlet area.
The Velocity Stack requires an air filter with an approximately 152 mm mounting flange.

Pre-Facelift MX-5 NB / NB1 – 1998–2000
Recommended filter:
Ramair PR-CC-193-150
The larger PR-CC-194-150 does not provide sufficient clearance with the original NB1 headlights.
Facelift MX-5 NBFL – 2001–2005
Recommended filter:
Ramair PR-CC-194-150
This also applies to cars fitted with NBFL-style aftermarket headlights where sufficient clearance is available.
The Velocity Stack itself is compatible with both NB and NBFL models. The correct filter must be selected according to the installed headlight type.

🔧 Installation & ECU Tuning
Designed as a plug-and-play, fully reversible upgrade.
No cutting, drilling or permanent modification of original vehicle parts is required.
No ECU tuning is required — the intake is designed to work with the original Mazda ECU.
For customers looking to extract maximum performance, a custom ECU calibration is recommended, particularly on modified engines or when combined with a larger throttle body.
Optimizing fuel and ignition mapping allows the complete engine setup to be calibrated around the upgraded intake system.
The previous-generation Tuning3D intake, which uses a very similar short-intake concept, achieved a measured +3.8 wheel horsepower on a stock Mazda MX-5 1.8 BP4W with the original ECU and no tuning.
The V3 has not yet been independently dyno tested, so no specific power increase is claimed for this version until dedicated testing has been completed.
